How to back up family photos: a simple plan for every phone
In most families, the photos are spread across four phones, three cloud accounts and a drawer of old memory cards. Nobody has all the photos from the last holiday, and the oldest phone is about to break. Here is a plan that works for every phone, in five steps.
1. Pick one home for the photos
Decide where the family’s photos live: one computer at home, or one cloud account that everyone shares. Mixing both usually means some photos are in neither. If your family mixes Android and iPhone, check that your choice works for both.
2. Make backup automatic, for everyone
A backup that needs someone to remember it will stop. Whatever you choose, every phone should send new photos by itself: on Wi-Fi, while charging, with no button to press. Check the phones of children and grandparents too.
3. Keep the originals
Save the original files in full quality. iPhones take HEIC photos and many Android phones can take RAW photos: a good backup keeps them as they are. Avoid tools that shrink photos to save space.
4. Leave the junk out
A typical camera roll is full of screenshots, photos of receipts, price tags and ten nearly identical shots of the same moment. They fill the backup and hide the photos you care about. Leave them out, but do not delete them automatically: keep them on the phone, where you can still find them.
5. Keep a second copy
Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two kinds of storage, one of them somewhere else. The simplest start is a USB drive plugged into the family computer, plus a copy at a relative’s house or in an encrypted cloud.
Make the photos easy to enjoy
A backup nobody looks at is still a backup, but it is more fun when the photos are sorted. Folders by person and date make the collection easy to open with any program. Albums per trip bring together the photos everyone took.
Where PhotoAlbumsMesh fits
PhotoAlbumsMesh does steps 1 to 4 by itself, for Android and iPhone: every phone backs up to the family computer on home Wi-Fi, originals are kept, and junk stays on the phone. A USB drive can be the second copy (step 5) for free, and a computer at another house with Sync Anywhere.
