Back up phone photos to your home computer while you travel

Updated September 25, 2026 · by Volodymyr Usov

Holidays are when phones take the most photos, and when they are most likely to be lost, stolen or dropped in the sea. Waiting until you are home to back up is a risk. Here are the options, from the simplest.

Bring a laptop

If you travel with a laptop, back up the phones to it on the hotel Wi-Fi each evening. You then have two copies: on the phone and on the laptop. Keep the laptop and the phones in different bags when you move.

Note that many hotel and guest Wi-Fi networks stop devices from seeing each other (“client isolation”). If the phone cannot find the laptop, the laptop’s own hotspot usually works.

Bring a travel drive

A small USB-C drive can copy photos straight from many phones. It is cheap and needs no internet, but it is one more thing to remember and to lose.

Upload to a cloud

A cloud photo app can upload photos over the hotel Wi-Fi. It works well if you already pay for enough storage. Watch out for mobile data: videos are large, and roaming data is expensive.

Back up straight to your computer at home

The most complete option: the phone sends new photos over the internet to your own computer at home, while you travel. When you get back, everything is already there.

What matters here:

  • Encryption from end to end, so nobody in between can see the photos.
  • No router settings at home. Opening ports on a home router is a security risk and hard to get right.
  • Wi-Fi by default, with mobile data only if you allow it.
  • Your home computer must be on. If it is off, the photos wait on the phone.

Where PhotoAlbumsMesh fits

At home, PhotoAlbumsMesh backs up every family phone for free, and away from home too whenever the phone can connect straight to your home computer, with no router settings. When there is no direct way, Sync Anywhere sends the photos through our relay, sealed on the phone and opened only on your computer. A family laptop on the hotel Wi-Fi also works, and that part is free.
